Abstract

Patients who present to the orthodontist with missing teeth may have increased concerns regarding their aesthetic appearance. A patient may be missing an anterior tooth as a result of hypodontia, dental disease, trauma or failure of eruption. Replacing missing teeth during orthodontic treatment can have psychosocial and clinical benefits. There are various methods to replace an edentulous space during orthodontic treatment. This article describes the steps for using a pontic tooth in an edentulous anterior space chairside.

CPD/Clinical Relevance:

The replacement of missing teeth during orthodontic treatment has many benefits for the patient.

Article

Patients who present to the orthodontist with missing teeth may have increased concerns regarding their aesthetic appearance. A patient may be missing an anterior tooth for various reasons. The common reasons for temporary prosthetic replacement of teeth during orthodontic treatment include hypodontia, loss of teeth as a result of dental disease or trauma, and unerupted central incisors.

Variations from the ideal aesthetic norm can have a negative psychosocial effect on patients owing to self-perception or secondary to bullying.5 Patients with missing teeth have lower self-esteem, as well as difficulties with speech and mastication.6 Similarly, patients with spacing in the upper labial segment can experience a significant negative impact on their quality of life.7 This should be considered during orthodontic treatment, where edentulous spaces may increase in size during space opening for prosthetic replacement.

These findings highlight the importance of considering prosthetic replacement of missing teeth during orthodontic treatment to benefit the wellbeing of the patient.
