Abstract

An increasing number of patients are being referred by their general dental practitioners for consideration of an orthognathic approach to treatment. This is the first of two papers discussing the origins as well as the scope and limitations of orthognathic surgery when combined with orthodontic treatment. This report details the historical progression of orthognathic surgery since it was first performed more than a hundred years ago.
