Another year dawns!

The year past was one of continuing tremendous change in the world of orthodontics in the UK – the jury is still out on whether some of the changes were positive, but certainly some have made a significant and lasting impact on our working lives. If I may focus on one, it would be the decision of the General Dental Council to remove the barrier to Direct Access to some dental care professionals from May 2013, which in 2014 began seriously to change the landscape of orthodontic care. This aspect of practice, and many others, are addressed in this issue by Trevor Hodge, who provides an excellent, thoughtful article on Orthodontic Therapists and their integration into the Orthodontic Team. He is also able to address the wider aspects of Orthodontic Therapists and their input, not least on the job prospects of both Specialist Trainees and General Dental Practitioners working in Orthodontics. A changing scheme indeed!
